The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, set to take place in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, is expected to draw millions of devotees. To facilitate smooth travel for pilgrims, the Indian Railways will operate a massive number of special trains, including 13,000 trains with 3,000 being specially arranged for the Mela. Here’s everything you need to know about the special trains, routes, timings, and the facilities available during the event.
Key Dates for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025
The main bathing rituals or “Shahi Snan” will take place on:
- January 14 (Makar Sankranti)
- January 29 (Mauni Amavasya)
- February 3 (Basant Panchami)
Special Trains for the Maha Kumbh Mela
Indian Railways will operate 13,000 trains, including regular and special trains, to cater to the massive inflow of devotees. These trains will cover long-distance and short-distance routes, running continuously over the 50-day period of the festival.
Western Railway Special Trains
- 98 special trains will run from January 17 to February 23, focusing on passenger comfort and hygiene.
- Trains will stop at major stations, including Nangal Dam, Chandigarh, Moradabad, Lucknow, and Rae Bareli.
- The trains will be equipped with 18 coaches, including sleeper and AC three-tier coaches, with fares starting at ₹620 for sleeper class and ₹1,670 for AC three-tier.
North Eastern Railway Special Trains
- Jaynagar to Jhusi special train (05285/05286) will run on select dates (January 10, 24, 31, February 1, March 1).
- The train will halt at major stations such as Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, and Varanasi.
South Central Railway Special Trains Several special trains will operate from Guntur, Moula Ali, and Azamgarh, with the first train departing on January 18. Some notable services include:
- Train 7701 departs from Guntur at 23:00 on January 24 and arrives at Azamgarh at 17:15.
- Train 7702 will run from Azamgarh to Guntur on January 26.
Ring Rail Route Services
In addition to long-distance trains, ring rail services will be available for devotees traveling within Prayagraj and to nearby religious destinations:
- Prayagraj-Ayodhya-Varanasi-Prayagraj
- Prayagraj-Sangam Prayag-Jaunpur-Prayag-Prayagraj
- Govindpuri-Prayagraj-Chitrakoot-Govindpuri
Temporary “Tent City” and Medical Facilities
To accommodate the influx of pilgrims, IRCTC has set up a temporary tent city in Prayagraj, offering affordable lodging. Medical booths and small hospitals have been established at all major stations, providing essential health services around the clock.
Important Points to Note
- Bookings for special trains will begin in advance, with general coaches’ bookings opening two hours before departure.
- RPF and GRP officers will be deployed to assist and guide passengers, ensuring smooth travel and security during the festival.
