In a surprising move ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil announced on Monday that he would not endorse any party or candidate, advising his supporters who had filed nominations to withdraw their bids. Jarange’s decision to step back marks a significant shift from his earlier stance, where he had indicated plans to either support or oppose specific candidates based on their stance on Maratha reservations.
The announcement comes as the withdrawal deadline for nominations looms, with the state assembly elections set for November 20 and vote counting scheduled for November 23. Explaining his decision, Jarange emphasized that he was “under no pressure from anyone” and that the Maratha community should independently assess candidates’ commitment to their cause, encouraging voters to seek written or video pledges from candidates promising to support Maratha interests.
Notably, Jarange reaffirmed his continued dedication to securing Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota benefits for the Maratha community. He emphasized the influence of Maratha voters in Maharashtra’s political landscape, stating, “No one can be elected in this state without the support of Marathas.”
While Jarange had previously indicated support for two candidates in Parvati and Daund, and opposition to BJP-held seats like Bhokardan, Gangapur, and Kalamnuri, his recent statement withdraws such endorsements, leaving the Maratha community to choose candidates based on individual promises rather than affiliations.
This decision reflects a neutral stance amid heightened political tensions, reinforcing Jarange’s commitment to the reservation cause while steering clear of direct political involvement.
