The recent cabinet expansion in Maharashtra has triggered an intense power struggle within the Maha Yuti alliance, with leaders vying for the prestigious guardian minister positions across the state’s 36 districts. The allocation of these roles, seen as pivotal to regional governance and influence, has become a litmus test for Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

The political tussle is most pronounced in 11 districts, where competing claims have created friction within the ruling coalition. State BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule sought to allay concerns, stating, “The process will take time, but a resolution will emerge, just as it did with cabinet portfolios.”

Intense Rivalries in Key Districts

In Raigad, Minister Bharat Gogawale is challenging Aditi Tatkare, the previous guardian minister, in a bid to secure the position. Gogawale expressed confidence after discussions with CM Shinde, adding pressure on Tatkare to defend her role.

The stakes are particularly high in Beed, where Cabinet Ministers Dhananjay Munde (NCP) and Pankaja Munde (BJP) are locked in a fierce battle. Both leaders have significant influence in the district, making this contest a defining moment for the coalition.

Similarly, Thane has emerged as a battleground, with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and BJP Minister Ganesh Naik both staking claims. Shivsena Minister Pratap Sarnaik has openly backed Shinde, citing his familiarity with the district, adding another layer of complexity to the decision-making process.

In Nashik, the competition is equally fierce, with BJP’s Girish Mahajan, Shivsena’s Dada Bhuse, and NCP’s Narhari Zirwal and Manikrao Kokate all in contention. Meanwhile, Pune is witnessing a showdown between Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, the incumbent guardian minister, and BJP’s Chandrakant Patil.

Patil, emphasizing his commitment to party directives, remarked, “I accept whatever order is given by my party and leadership. The process is intricate, but the announcement will bring clarity.”

A Struggle Across Maharashtra

Districts like Jalgaon, Yavatmal, Satara, Ratnagiri, and Kolhapur are also witnessing similar power struggles. Prominent leaders, including Shivsena’s Gulabrao Patil, BJP’s Sanjay Sawkare, and NCP’s Hasan Mushrif, are vying for these influential roles.

The allocation of the Home Ministry has added to the tension. While Chief Minister Shinde had expressed interest in the portfolio, it was ultimately assigned to Deputy CM Fadnavis, leading to further discord. Shinde retained the Urban Development Ministry, while Ajit Pawar continues as Finance Minister, underscoring the delicate balance of power within the Maha Yuti.

A Test of Leadership

As the battle for guardian minister roles unfolds, it highlights the challenges of coalition politics. The Maha Yuti leadership faces the daunting task of balancing regional aspirations with alliance stability. The upcoming decisions are set to shape Maharashtra’s political landscape, with ramifications for governance and the coalition’s unity.
