Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is expected to submit his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan today at 11 AM, setting the stage for a leadership transition following the Mahayuti alliance’s landslide victory in the recent Assembly elections.

Shinde Urges Supporters to Refrain from Gatherings

In a statement issued via social media, Shinde appealed to his supporters not to gather at his official residence, ‘Varsha,’ in South Mumbai, to lobby for his continuation as Chief Minister. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering support but emphasized the need for unity within the alliance.

“After the great victory of the Mahayuti alliance, our government will once again be formed in the state. As a grand alliance, we contested the election together and remain united today,” Shinde wrote. He further added, “Out of love for me, some people have asked others to gather and come to Mumbai. I am deeply grateful for your affection. However, I appeal to everyone not to assemble in my support in such a manner.”

Mahayuti’s Commanding Victory

The Mahayuti alliance delivered a decisive win in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, securing 230 of the 288 seats. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats, followed by its allies—the Shiv Sena faction led by Shinde with 57 seats and the NCP faction headed by Ajit Pawar with 41 seats.

The coalition’s resounding victory has paved the way for the formation of a new government. However, speculation remains over the next Chief Minister, with current Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, a two-time former Chief Minister, being a strong contender for the position.

Transition Amid Speculation

Eknath Shinde’s resignation comes amidst discussions over the power-sharing formula within the alliance. Sources suggest that a leadership change may have been part of a pre-arranged agreement between alliance partners, with Shinde stepping aside to allow a new candidate to take the reins.

The Mahayuti alliance’s combined strength and strategic alignment have raised expectations of a stable and dynamic government in Maharashtra. The final decision on the leadership is likely to be announced after consultations among alliance leaders.
