In a major step to boost voter turnout, the Maharashtra Government has announced December 2 as a paid holiday for all employees across the state in view of the upcoming local body elections. The decision ensures that every eligible voter gets the opportunity to cast their vote without workplace restrictions.
A government resolution (GR) issued on Friday stated that all employees registered as voters in the polling districts must be granted a paid day off, even if their workplace is located outside the constituency where they are enrolled. The government emphasised that voting is a constitutional right and no citizen should be denied the ability to participate in the democratic process.
The first phase of polling will cover 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats, marking one of the largest rounds of local body elections in the state. According to officials, the decision was prompted by reports from previous elections where several establishments failed to grant leave or provided insufficient time, resulting in many citizens being unable to vote.
Departments of Industries, Energy and Labour jointly clarified that the new directive aligns with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which mandates paid leave for voters on polling day. All establishments under the Labour Department—including factories, shops, commercial units, and hotels—have been instructed to fully comply.
Recognising the challenges faced by essential service providers, the government has allowed limited flexibility. Organisations that cannot afford to grant a full-day holiday due to critical operations must provide at least 2–3 hours of special voting leave to their staff.
