Maharashtra’s new government is expected to take the oath of office on December 2, with preparations for the grand swearing-in ceremony already underway. However, sources indicate that the delay is due to an ongoing tussle over the Chief Minister’s post within the ruling Mahayuti coalition. The coalition, consisting of the BJP, Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, is still grappling with differences regarding leadership.
Shiv Sena leaders are adamant about retaining Eknath Shinde as Chief Minister, emphasizing that his leadership was instrumental in securing the alliance’s victory in the recent elections. “The elections were contested under Shinde’s leadership, and retaining him as CM will honor the alliance’s unity,” said Sena spokesperson Naresh Mhaske.
On the other hand, BJP leaders, including MLC Pravin Darekar, are pushing for Devendra Fadnavis to reclaim the Chief Minister’s position, following the party’s strong performance in the election with a historic 132 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly. Many BJP members believe Fadnavis is best suited to lead the state government.
In a significant development, the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP has reportedly agreed to support Fadnavis for the Chief Minister role. This support strengthens the BJP’s claim, as the Mahayuti alliance, with 230 out of 288 seats, holds a commanding position, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi remains far behind with only 46 seats.
Despite the delay in forming the government, officials have clarified that there is no immediate constitutional crisis. The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has already been constituted following the Election Commission’s announcement of the results, ruling out the possibility of President’s Rule in the state.
Devendra Fadnavis has reassured the public, denying any major disputes within the coalition. “There is no dispute regarding the CM’s post. We will work out a consensus soon,” Fadnavis stated, expressing confidence that the leadership issue will be resolved shortly.
As the swearing-in ceremony approaches, the political drama in Maharashtra continues to unfold, with all eyes on the resolution of the Chief Ministerial deadlock.
