The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has signalled its intent to take full control of key municipal corporations in Maharashtra’s Thane region, with party leaders asserting that mayoral posts in Kalyan-Dombivli, Thane and Ulhasnagar will go to alliance candidates. Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan said the post-election arithmetic clearly favours the ruling coalition and leaves little room for rival formations to stake a claim.
Speaking on the evolving civic power equations, Chavan said the verdict delivered by voters reflects trust in the Mahayuti’s leadership and governance model. He pointed out that recent political realignments at the corporator level have further strengthened the alliance’s position, ensuring stable majorities in all three corporations.
The situation in Kalyan-Dombivli has drawn particular attention after five Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporators extended support to the Shiv Sena, tipping the balance decisively in favour of Mahayuti. With this backing, the BJP–Shiv Sena combine now commands an overwhelming majority in the 122-member civic body, pushing the opposition, including Shiv Sena (UBT), to the margins.
In Thane, the Shiv Sena has already emerged as the dominant force, comfortably crossing the majority mark on its own, while the BJP’s numbers add further strength to the alliance. Ulhasnagar, too, has seen a similar consolidation, with both alliance partners performing strongly in the polls and later gaining additional support from smaller groups, effectively sealing control of the corporation.
Chavan said discussions on how mayoral responsibilities will be shared between BJP and Shiv Sena have already taken place and will be formally concluded after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hold a joint review meeting. He stressed that the alliance’s focus is not just on power-sharing but on ensuring smooth civic administration.
Political observers see these developments as a setback for the opposition, particularly the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), which has struggled to maintain unity among anti-Mahayuti forces after the results. The post-poll shifts underline Mahayuti’s strategy of combining pre-poll coordination with post-election outreach to smaller parties and independents.
