West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged the Indian government to advocate for a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Bangladesh amid escalating tensions and alleged atrocities against Hindus and other minorities in the neighboring country.
Addressing the West Bengal Assembly, Banerjee also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene directly in ensuring the safety of persecuted Indians abroad and facilitate their return. She further demanded that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarify India’s stance on the situation during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
“If the Prime Minister is unavailable, the External Affairs Minister should address the issue in Parliament. The nation deserves transparency on India’s position regarding the developments in Bangladesh,” Banerjee said.
Concern Over Persecution of Minorities
The Bengal CM expressed alarm over reports of minority persecution, including the arrest of Hindu priests and the harassment of individuals with ties to Bangladesh. She recounted her discussions with representatives from ISKCON and individuals in Bengal with familial roots in Bangladesh.
“Although bilateral issues are not under my jurisdiction, the experiences shared by residents of Bengal with connections in Bangladesh compelled me to raise this matter. The arrests and alleged atrocities demand immediate attention,” Banerjee stated.
Call for International Action
Banerjee urged the central government to engage with Dhaka’s interim administration and, if necessary, involve the United Nations. “An international peacekeeping force could help restore normalcy in Bangladesh. This should be done in consultation with their government to ensure stability,” she said.
The CM also emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the crisis, assuring support for those fleeing violence. “We are ready to rehabilitate persecuted Indians on this side of the border. Bengal is willing to share resources—no one will go hungry here. Our doors are open for those in need,” she remarked.
Political Implications
Banerjee’s appeal comes at a time of heightened sensitivity in Indo-Bangladesh relations. While the Indian government has yet to respond to her call, her proactive stance underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential implications for regional stability.
The demand for a UN peacekeeping mission marks a significant escalation in addressing the crisis, setting the stage for broader diplomatic and political discourse.
