Mamata Banerjee’s Ultimatum In Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case: ‘We Will Hand Over The Case To The CBI If…’

As the deadline approaches, the tension in Kolkata continues to mount, with all eyes on the police to see if they can deliver justice before Sunday or if the CBI will be called in to take over the investigation.

In the wake of a brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued a stern ultimatum, declaring that if the state police fail to solve the case by Sunday, the investigation will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Speaking to reporters after visiting the victim’s family, Banerjee expressed her dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation, while also casting doubt on the effectiveness of the central probe agency. “If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI. However, the success rate of the central probe agency is very low,” she stated, according to a PTI report.

The case has ignited widespread protests, particularly within the medical community. The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, resigned in the wake of the incident, citing relentless pressure and accusations. “I cannot take this insult anymore. All the allegations raised against me are false and fabricated. A student movement has been incited to remove me. There is a political mind behind this,” Ghosh told PTI. He added that he had informed the police within an hour of the incident and handed over the CCTV footage.

Banerjee, who has vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused, indicated that her government would support a CBI investigation if the students demanded it. “If they do not trust the West Bengal government, they can approach any investigating agency; we have no objection,” she stated, signaling openness to external oversight.

The autopsy report of the 28-year-old victim revealed harrowing details of the crime, which occurred between 3 and 6 pm. The report, as quoted by PTI, described severe injuries to the victim’s face, nails, private parts, and other areas of her body, including her belly, leg, neck, hand, and lips, as well as bleeding from her eyes and mouth.

As the deadline approaches, the tension in Kolkata continues to mount, with all eyes on the police to see if they can deliver justice before Sunday or if the CBI will be called in to take over the investigation.
