A day after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) failed to secure a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections, party chief Mayawati expressed disappointment with the Muslim community for not voting for her party despite being given substantial representation in the candidate list.
Mayawati stated that the Muslim community, which forms an important part of the BSP's support base, was unable to understand her party properly. Consequently, she said the party would give the community a chance in future elections only after "a lot of thought" to avoid a significant loss like the one faced in the recent polls.
"The Muslim community, which is an important part of the Bahujan Samaj Party, is not able to understand the BSP properly despite being given proper representation in the past elections and this time also in the Lok Sabha general elections," Mayawati said to PTI. "So, in such a situation, the party will give them a chance in the elections after a lot of thought so that the party does not suffer a huge loss in the future like this time."
The BSP had fielded 35 Muslim candidates in the Lok Sabha elections, but the community appears to have voted for the INDIA bloc, which includes the Samajwadi Party and the Congress.
This is not the first time the BSP has failed to open its account in the Lok Sabha polls. In 2014, the party did not win any seats, while in 2019, they secured 10 seats in an alliance with the Samajwadi Party.
Mayawati said her party would conduct a deep analysis to understand the reasons behind its embarrassing performance in Uttar Pradesh, where her former ally Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party breached the BJP stronghold by securing 37 seats. The Congress, another INDIA bloc ally, won six seats in the state, including the prestigious Rae Bareli and Amethi constituencies.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, which had won landslide victories in the last two general elections, managed to win only 33 seats in Uttar Pradesh and 240 seats nationally.
