Karnataka Housing Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan on Tuesday dismissed allegations made against him in a viral leaked audio clip, stating they are “completely baseless.” The controversy has erupted following an audio recording allegedly featuring Congress MLA B R Patil, in which claims are made regarding corruption in the allotment of government housing under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation scheme.
“The allegations made against me are false and unfounded. I respect B R Patil a lot. I’ve just returned to Bengaluru after being out of town. In the audio that’s going viral, he hasn’t directly said anything against me. I will speak to him personally and understand what the issue is,” said Zameer Ahmed Khan while addressing the media.
In the leaked audio, Patil reportedly claims that over 950 houses in his constituency were allotted in exchange for bribes, bypassing the eligible beneficiaries. The clip also suggests Patil expressing serious concern over irregularities in the beneficiary list and warning that the issue could potentially destabilize the government if exposed.
The audio leak has triggered strong reactions from the opposition. The BJP and JD(S) have demanded Zameer Ahmed Khan’s resignation and a judicial probe into the allegations. BJP leaders alleged that corruption in the housing department is rampant and that the minister must take responsibility for the reported malpractices.
Reports suggest that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken note of the controversy and has reportedly asked BR Patil for an explanation regarding his remarks in the audio.
Amidst the political storm, Zameer clarified that the final allotment of houses is done at the local body level and that his department only provides guidelines. “The process is transparent. If anyone has evidence, let them come forward. I am open to any investigation. The image of the government should not be tarnished by baseless accusations,” he said.
