Mohan Charan Majhi Set To Become Odisha’s First BJP Chief Minister, Ending Naveen Patnaik’s 24-Year Reign

The swearing-in ceremony for the inaugural BJP government in Odisha is scheduled for June 12, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to attend the event at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar.

In a dramatic turn of events, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mohan Majhi is poised to become the first BJP Chief Minister of Odisha, marking the end of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik’s 24-year tenure following a significant defeat in the State Assembly elections. Majhi clinched the Keonjhar seat with an impressive margin of approximately 87,815 votes, triumphing over BJD’s Mina Majhi in the constituency.

This landmark victory marks the BJP’s ascension to power in Odisha without the need for a coalition, a significant departure from its previous alliance with the BJD in 2000 and 2004.

Joining Majhi in the state’s leadership are Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, who will serve as the Deputy Chief Ministers of Odisha.

The selection of Majhi and Parida as the state’s top leadership came after deliberations at the BJP legislature party meeting, graced by Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Bhupender Yadav as observers.

The BJP secured a comfortable majority in the 147-member Assembly, capturing 78 seats. Notably, the party contested the elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, refraining from naming a specific chief ministerial candidate. The BJP’s triumph in the Odisha Assembly Election 2024 saw a vote share of 40.07 per cent, with the party garnering 1,00,64,827 votes across the state. This victory represents a significant leap from the party’s performance in previous elections, with 23, 10, and 6 seats won in the 2019, 2014, and 2009 Odisha Assembly elections, respectively.

Majhi, a prominent figure within the tribal community, has a storied political career, having served as a four-time MLA. His dedication to public service and adept organizational skills have earned him widespread acclaim and respect within Odisha’s political circles.

The swearing-in ceremony for the inaugural BJP government in Odisha is scheduled for June 12, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slated to attend the event at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar. The BJP has extended an invitation to BJD president and outgoing chief minister Naveen Patnaik for the ceremony.

In a symbolic gesture, the first invitation for the ceremony was presented to Lord Jagannath in Puri, delivered by newly elected MLAs. As preparations unfold for the historic event, the Odisha government has announced the closure of all state government offices and courts in Bhubaneswar after 1 pm on June 12 in light of the swearing-in ceremony for the new chief minister and council of ministers. This directive, issued by the revenue and disaster management department, applies to all state government offices and revenue and magisterial courts within the jurisdiction of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).
