Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday announced that the Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held from July 21 to August 12. Both Houses — Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — will convene at 11 a.m. on the opening day. This marks the first session after a gap of over three months and is expected to be politically heated.

The announcement comes in the wake of heightened calls from the Opposition, with 16 parties jointly demanding a special session to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory cross-border military strike, Operation Sindoor. The Opposition had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that the Parliament must be informed of critical national security developments.

Responding to these demands, the government formalised the Monsoon Session schedule, with Rijiju stating that “all issues raised by the Opposition can be taken up during the upcoming session.”

The previous Budget Session, held in two phases from January 31 to April 4, had seen the passage of several key legislations. Among them was the Waqf Amendment Bill, aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency in the governance of waqf properties. It also repealed the outdated Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923. The bill focused on scientific and modern management practices for waqf properties, along with stakeholder empowerment and swifter case resolutions.

Other significant laws passed included the ‘Tribhuvan’ Sahkari University Bill, 2025, which establishes a new cooperative university to boost education and R&D in the cooperative sector. Also passed was the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, simplifying regulations concerning entry, exit, visa requirements, and registration of foreigners.
