Navy Extends Condolences and Assures Action
Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and extended wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured. The Navy spokesperson, through a post on X, confirmed that search and rescue efforts were ongoing.
“Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, CNS, and all personnel of the Indian Navy offer heartfelt condolences to the grieving families of those who tragically lost their lives in the unfortunate accident in Mumbai Harbour and wish for a speedy and full recovery of those who were injured,” the Navy spokesperson stated.
The Navy also revealed that two persons from the ferry remain missing, with eight Navy craft, a naval helicopter, and a Coast Guard vessel continuing their search and rescue operations throughout the night. Additionally, a Board of Inquiry has been constituted to investigate the cause of the accident.
Engine Malfunction Blamed for the Collision
Preliminary reports indicate that an engine malfunction during Navy trials led to the collision. The Navy lost control of its vessel, which struck the Neelkamal, causing it to capsize.
Victims and Relief Measures
As per the BMC, 105 passengers were admitted to various hospitals in Mumbai. Among them, 90 have been discharged or are reported to be in stable condition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that all necessary assistance would be provided to those affected by the tragedy.
“The state government will provide an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased. Rescue operations are underway to ensure that every missing person is accounted for,” said Fadnavis.
