The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is gearing up to launch the second phase of the highly anticipated Mumbai Metro 3, connecting Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli. Slated for a March 2025 opening, this phase will extend services to Acharya Atre Chowk station, covering six key locations: Dharavi, Shitladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk.
These stations are strategically located in Mumbai’s bustling urban hubs, encompassing educational institutions, iconic religious sites, corporate offices, and vibrant commercial zones. The extension is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and ease daily commutes for thousands of residents.
“We are planning to open this 9.7 km section by March 2025. Track-laying and Overhead Catenary System (OHE) works are complete, and the remaining architectural and signaling installations will be finalized soon,” said S K Gupta, MMRC’s Director of Projects, in a statement to The Times of India.
Trial runs have already commenced, with trains operating in both directions at Acharya Atre Chowk station to gather critical data for software updates. MMRC plans to submit an application to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for the final approval, which is expected to proceed swiftly, given the rolling stock’s clearance during Phase I trials for the Aarey-JVLR-BKC section.
Operational plans, including train deployment and service schedules, are currently being finalized to ensure seamless transit once the phase becomes operational.
The first phase of Mumbai Metro 3, which began operations on October 5, 2024, has already recorded a daily ridership of approximately 22,000 passengers. With this new extension reaching densely populated areas, the figure is expected to rise significantly, further easing Mumbai’s transit woes.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced during a Legislative Council session that the next segment of Metro 3, connecting BKC to Colaba, is scheduled to open by May 2025, marking another milestone in Mumbai’s metro expansion.
