Mumbai Rains: Navi Mumbai Schools Shut, Red Alert Issued As Rivers Approach Danger Mark, Here’s The Latest Update

The situation remains critical as Mumbai braces for further rainfall, emphasizing the need for precautionary measures and timely updates from civic authorities to ensure public safety amidst the monsoon deluge.

As incessant rains continue to lash Mumbai and its neighboring districts, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has declared a holiday in all schools within its jurisdiction on July 9th. This decision comes amidst heightened concerns over the rising water levels in rivers and a ‘red’ alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for very heavy rainfall.

Here are the top updates from Mumbai:

  1. Schools Closed in Navi Mumbai: The NMMC Education department has ordered the closure of all government and private schools in Navi Mumbai on July 9th due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging concerns.

The Kundalika River, with a warning level of 23 meters, is currently flowing at 22.5 meters. Similarly, the Kalu River, which has a warning level of 102 meters, is at 101.1 meters, as reported by the Superintendent Engineer of Thane region.
  3. Red Alert by IMD: The IMD has issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai on July 8th, forecasting very heavy rainfall. The city has already witnessed severe waterlogging, leading to suspended railway and flight services since morning.

Waterlogging has been reported in low-lying areas such as Worli, Kurla East, King’s Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station, severely hampering daily commutes.
  7. Central Railway Disruptions: Despite efforts to mitigate waterlogging with high-capacity pumps, Central Railway services faced disruptions on Monday. Local trains were halted for extended periods, inconveniencing thousands of passengers, while several out-station trains heading towards Mumbai remained stranded.
