Mumbai Rains: Schools Closed, Flights And Trains Affected, Waterlogging In Many Areas, Traffic Chaos; Here’s the Latest Update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra today, July 25. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has placed a yellow alert for the financial capital, warning of potential disruptions. An orange alert has been issued for Thane, Palghar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Raigad, and Ratnagiri.

“The districts of Konkan are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places. The districts of Madhya Maharashtra are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in Ghat region,” RMC added.

Furthermore, North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are forecasted to experience heavy rain at isolated places, while Vidarbha may see thundershowers, gusty winds, and heavy rain in select areas.

Travel Chaos: Flights and Trains Impacted

Air India Airlines has alerted passengers that flights to and from Mumbai may face delays due to the heavy rains. “Guests are advised to start early for the airport, as slow traffic and waterlogging may delay movement,” the airline stated in a post on X.

In addition to air travel disruptions, road traffic has been severely affected. Raigad Police reported a landslide at Tamhini Ghat on the Raigad-Pune route, causing traffic to halt until the debris is cleared. Video footage from the Eastern Express Highway shows significant traffic congestion and slow vehicular movement amid incessant rainfall.

Central Railway announced on X that the PANVEL-CHOUK line has been suspended since 09:42 AM due to heavy rain. Consequently, Train No. 12126 will run via Kalyan. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that Vihar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai, began overflowing at around 3:50 AM today, and the city continues to receive heavy rainfall. Severe waterlogging has been reported in the Chembur area.

Schools Closed Amid Flood Warnings

In response to the severe weather, the Palghar Collector’s Office declared that all schools and colleges in Maharashtra’s Palghar district will remain closed today. The closure follows the IMD’s orange alert for the region.

Konkan Railway has short-terminated trains at Thane and Dadar stations due to ongoing platform extension work at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT). Additionally, Central Railway has rescheduled the CSMT-MADGAON TEJAS EXPRESS, Train Number 22119, due to the heavy showers. The train, initially set to depart at 5:50 PM, will now begin its journey at 7:30 PM.
