A viral video has surfaced showing a Muslim woman being denied free food outside Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital after refusing to chant the religious slogan “Jai Shri Ram” on demand from the food distributor. The incident, which took place near the hospital on Jerbai Wadia Road, has sparked widespread outrage on social media over what many are calling discriminatory behavior.
According to local reports, an NGO had organized the food distribution for patients and their families. The video shows a hijab-clad woman in line when the man distributing food stops her, allegedly telling her she must chant “Jai Shri Ram” to receive food. When she refused, he insisted she leave the line, telling her, “Jisko Ram nahin bolna hai line me khada nahi ho” (Those who won’t say ‘Ram’ should not stand in line).
The confrontation escalated as the man warned, “Laat marunga” (I’ll kick you), to which the woman replied, “I’m not standing on your father’s property.” The exchange, caught on video, quickly spread across social media, with thousands of users condemning the man’s actions and questioning the NGO’s role in the incident.
Critics on social media expressed frustration and dismay:
“They’re not an NGO if they refuse to feed people based on religious slogans. Disgusting behavior,” one user posted.
Another commented, “This reflects how hatred against minorities is becoming normalized across India.”
“This isn’t what Hinduism stands for; this isn’t what Ram represents,” wrote another, calling on the NGO to address the issue.
Some users demanded that the NGO identify the distributor and take action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local police were notified of the incident, though no formal complaint has been lodged as of yet, and no action has been taken against the food distributor.
