Amid growing concerns over respiratory illnesses in China, two new cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported from Nagpur, Maharashtra, taking India's total count to seven. The cases involve two children, aged seven and 13, who tested positive for HMPV at a private hospital. Both children presented symptoms of cough and fever.
Of the seven cases in India, two have been reported in Bengaluru, two in Nagpur, two in Tamil Nadu, and one in Ahmedabad. These cases highlight the spread of HMPV, a globally recognised respiratory virus that has garnered attention following a recent outbreak in China.
What is HMPV?
HMPV, or Human Metapneumovirus, is a viral pathogen that causes respiratory infections in people of all age groups. It was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating worldwide for years. The virus typically spreads through the air, often via respiratory droplets, and is most active during the winter and early spring months.
Health Authorities? Response
Union Health Minister JP Nadda addressed concerns on Monday, stating that HMPV is not a new virus. "Health experts have clarified that HMPV has been known since 2001 and has been circulating globally for many years. It spreads through air, primarily during respiration," Nadda explained.
He added that the Health Ministry, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are monitoring the situation in China and neighbouring countries closely. "WHO has taken cognisance of the situation and will soon share its report with us," he added.
Global Context and Monitoring
The outbreak of HMPV in China has triggered heightened vigilance worldwide. India?s health agencies are keeping a close watch on the evolving situation to prevent further spread within the country. Public health experts have urged the public to maintain respiratory hygiene and seek medical attention for symptoms like persistent cough or fever.
