In the aftermath of the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, protests have erupted across the country, prompting the Union Home Ministry to take swift action. In an unprecedented move, the ministry has ordered all states to submit continuous reports on the law and order situation every two hours, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The official notification, issued on August 16, 2024, emphasizes the need for rigorous monitoring of public safety across the nation. The directive instructs state police forces to relay updates to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) control room in New Delhi via email, fax, or even WhatsApp, starting from 4 PM on the same day. "Henceforth, a continuous two-hourly law and order situation report in this regard may kindly be sent to the MHA control room (New Delhi) by Fax/ Email/ WhatsApp," the notification read, as reported by news agency PTI.

This directive follows the discovery of the semi-naked body of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The case took a grim turn when a civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, was arrested the next day in connection with the heinous crime. In response to the public outcry and the gravity of the case, the Calcutta High Court has handed over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In a significant development, the CBI has announced that the accused, Sanjay Roy, will undergo a psychoanalysis test. A team of experts from Delhi's Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has been called in to assist with the investigation, underlining the complexity and seriousness of the case.

As protests continue to sweep the nation, healthcare professionals are at the forefront, demanding justice and sweeping reforms. The doctors' community is calling for an overhaul of the working and living conditions of resident doctors, alongside the implementation of a central law aimed at protecting healthcare professionals from workplace violence.

The nationwide unrest reflects the deepening concerns over the safety of women and the need for stringent measures to prevent such horrific crimes in the future. The Home Ministry's directive for continuous law and order monitoring underscores the government's commitment to maintaining peace and addressing public concerns during these turbulent times.
