Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize Mumbai and Thane’s transport infrastructure. Speaking at a campaign rally for Mahayuti candidates in Thane on Sunday, Gadkari announced the introduction of water taxi services that would enable commuters to reach Navi Mumbai Airport from any part of Mumbai in just 17 minutes.
Game-Changing Water Connectivity
Gadkari emphasized utilizing Mumbai and Thane’s extensive sea routes to address longstanding traffic congestion and pollution. Plans include the construction of jetties near Navi Mumbai Airport to facilitate seamless water taxi connectivity. This innovative move is expected to significantly reduce road traffic, offering residents a faster and eco-friendly alternative.
Additionally, the minister proposed introducing amphibious seaplanes that can take off and land on small water bodies like Thane’s lakes. “These planes eliminate the need for traditional runways, and we are seeking investors to harness the immense potential of this technology,” he said.
Electric Buses and Urban Traffic Relief
In his address, Gadkari outlined the features of an 18-meter-long electric inter-city bus service, boasting a seating capacity of 135 passengers. The bus, capable of running 40 kilometers on a single 30-second charge, promises a luxurious, flight-like experience while promoting sustainable urban transport.
He also assured that the completion of the New Delhi-Mumbai Expressway would ease outstation traffic between Mumbai and Pune. The minister further proposed restricting the movement of freight vehicles within city limits to enhance urban traffic flow.
Tackling Political Controversy
During the rally, Gadkari took aim at Congress, accusing the party of spreading misinformation about the BJP’s alleged intentions to amend the Constitution. He stated, “No one can modify the salient features of the Constitution,” and highlighted Congress’s 1975 Emergency-era amendments, which were later reversed.
Call for Development-Centric Voting
Urging voters in Thane to prioritize development over caste-based politics, Gadkari reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to progressive solutions. He emphasized the need for futuristic transportation systems to support Mumbai and Thane’s expanding urban landscape.
Gadkari’s visionary proposals signal a transformative shift in the region’s transport network, promising faster commutes, reduced congestion, and a push toward sustainable urbanization.
