In a bid to enforce stricter discipline across the ranks, the Bihar Police has issued a fresh directive prohibiting female police personnel from wearing jewellery or makeup while on duty. The order, circulated earlier this week, mandates all senior officers to ensure strict compliance with the grooming standards of the force.
The directive, issued by the Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order, comes following observations from a recent review meeting chaired by Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar. The meeting reportedly focused on concerns related to uniformity and presentation among field personnel, with particular emphasis on women officers' appearance while in uniform.
According to the circular, it has been “frequently observed” that many women personnel, including constables, sub-inspectors, and inspectors, arrive on duty wearing oversized earrings, bangles, nose rings, and decorative accessories. The ADG stated this growing trend goes against the values of professional conduct, uniform discipline, and decorum expected from a law enforcement agency.
The order, dated July 7, has been sent to all Range Inspectors General, Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), and Superintendents of Police (SPs), instructing them to monitor and ensure implementation at the district level. Officers have been asked to personally ensure that no female police personnel are seen wearing adornments or cosmetics while performing official duties.
The circular also states that violations of the new grooming protocol will invite disciplinary action, although specific penalties were not detailed.
