West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday strongly condemned the recent assault case in Durgapur, asserting that “No daughter or woman is safe in Bengal.” He called for immediate police action, swift registration of cases, and the strictest legal measures, including capital punishment where applicable.

Addressing the media, Adhikari criticized the state government for failing to ensure women’s safety and said, “Mamata Banerjee has been saying, ‘If the case had been in my hands I would have acted.’ It's in your and the police's hands now: act immediately, register cases, try them under the appropriate laws and impose capital punishment where warranted.”

He urged authorities to expedite the investigation, make all necessary arrests, and ensure a fast-track trial. Adhikari also stressed that the handling of the case reflects a systemic failure in protecting women, and accountability must be fixed at every level, including police and hospital authorities.
