"No More Support to BJP, BJD Declares Itself As Opposition," Said Naveen Patnaik

In a significant political shift, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has announced its transformation into a "strong and vibrant opposition" after terminating its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This decision marks a departure from the BJD's role as a supportive partner to the BJP in passing crucial legislation during the Modi government's previous terms.

Following a meeting with his nine Rajya Sabha MPs in Bhubaneswar on Monday, Patnaik emphasized the party's new stance, stating, "We will hold the centre accountable on all issues affecting Odisha's development and the welfare of its people. Many of our rightful demands have remained unmet."

The BJD's shift in strategy comes in the wake of failed alliance negotiations with the BJP in March, just weeks before the elections commenced. Had these talks succeeded, it would have marked a reunion between the BJD and the BJP nearly 15 years after their initial split, which was notably remarked upon by late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj.

In the past, the BJD's support had been pivotal for the BJP in navigating challenges such as securing the election of ministers like Ashwini Vaishnaw to the Rajya Sabha in 2009 and 2014. However, with the alliance now dissolved, the BJD intends to assertively represent the interests of Odisha's 4.5 crore citizens in Parliament as a vocal opposition force.
