Opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, and Left factions, staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha on Monday after their demand for a discussion on the Election Commission's alleged lapses in issuing multiple duplicate voter ID cards and on delimitation was disallowed. The MPs had submitted a total of 10 notices under rule 267, seeking to set aside the business of the day to address issues ranging from duplicate voter IDs to the impact of the delimitation exercise on southern states.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh, however, ruled that the notices were not in conformity with the chair's guidelines and refused to accept them, leaving the opposition's concerns unrecorded. TMC and Congress leaders, including Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Mausam B Noo, Sushmita Dev, and Pramod Tiwari, demanded a debate on the Election Commission’s failure to prevent the issuance of multiple duplicate Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Cards across various states. Meanwhile, Tamil parties from DMK and CPM, led by P Wilson and V. Sivadasan respectively, pressed for discussion on how the delimitation exercise would affect southern states.

Adding to the debate, BJP’s Samik Bhattacharya called for discussion on rising atrocities against SCs, STs, and OBCs in West Bengal, while CPI’s P Santhosh Kumar raised concerns over the ramifications of the Bharti Airtel-Reliance Jio deal with Starlink on satellite broadband services. Sanjay Singh of AAP and Haris Beeran of IUML also sought to bring attention to the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi and the growing problem of drug addiction among Kerala’s youth.

As slogans echoed in the chamber, the opposition's walkout underscored their frustration with what they described as a deliberate effort by the Rajya Sabha leadership to sideline critical issues. The incident has further deepened the rift between the ruling and opposition parties, highlighting a broader debate on the accountability of the Election Commission and the implications of delimitation for the nation’s electoral landscape.
