Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a judicial inquiry into the recent violence in Parbhani, which erupted following the desecration of a replica of the Constitution at a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar near Parbhani railway station. The incident, which led to widespread protests, property damage, and the arrest of 50 individuals, has caused significant unrest in the region.

Condemning the violence, CM Fadnavis stated, “While such acts of desecration are intolerable, resorting to violence is equally unacceptable.” He assured that the government is committed to uncovering the truth behind the events.

Key Events and Arrest

The controversy began with the desecration allegedly carried out by a man identified as Pawar. Parbhani police confirmed his immediate arrest, revealing that he is mentally challenged and had no criminal intent. According to police officials, the damage was discovered on December 12, followed by Pawar’s arrest. However, protests escalated the next day, leading to vandalism of approximately 20 vehicles, shops, and even damage to the district collector’s office.

Protesters initially organized a bandh that quickly turned violent, disrupting public life and causing significant property damage. Despite efforts by law enforcement to control the situation, the violence continued for hours. Authorities have since deployed additional police forces to maintain peace in the area.

Custodial Death Sparks Outrage

In a tragic turn of events, Somnath Suryawanshi, a 35-year-old man arrested in connection with the violence, died in judicial custody on Sunday. Suryawanshi, who was detained on December 12, reportedly complained of chest pains and was rushed to a government hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family, however, claimed he was not involved in the protests and had been in Parbhani to attend a law exam.

Local activists have accused the police of mishandling the arrested individuals, further fueling tensions. “This custodial death raises serious questions about the treatment of those detained,” said a community leader.

Government Promises Justice

The Maharashtra government has pledged a thorough investigation into both the violence and Suryawanshi’s death. “Swift justice will be delivered to those affected by these unfortunate incidents,” CM Fadnavis assured.
