Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday launched a strong political offensive against Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, accusing him of compromising principles for the sake of power. Fadnavis said recent political alignments have made it clear to the public what kind of leadership and priorities the opposition represents.
Speaking to reporters after attending a Veer Bal Diwas programme at Gurudwara Guru Tegh Bahadur Darbar in Mumbai, the Chief Minister remarked that alliances formed purely for electoral arithmetic would not escape public scrutiny. “When power becomes the only goal, values are the first casualty. The people of Maharashtra are watching closely and will respond at the right time,” he said.
Without directly naming parties, Fadnavis hinted that opposition coalitions built around vote calculations rather than ideology risk alienating voters. He warned that partnerships with elements perceived as divisive or irresponsible could backfire politically. “Aligning with forces that damage social harmony for vote appeasement will never be accepted by society,” he added.
The remarks come at a politically sensitive moment, shortly after Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray announced a joint front for the upcoming municipal elections, setting the stage for an intense battle in urban Maharashtra.
Earlier in the day, Fadnavis participated in religious observances marking Veer Bal Diwas, paying tribute to the courage of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Sahibzades. He described their martyrdom as a defining moment in India’s moral and cultural history, cutting across religious identities.
The Chief Minister underlined the role of Sikh Gurus in safeguarding human values and national unity. “Their sacrifices were not limited to one community. They stood for humanity, freedom of belief, and the idea of India itself,” he said.
