Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is currently heading an all-party delegation across the Americas, expressed satisfaction after Colombia withdrew its earlier statement and expressed solidarity with India following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Tharoor acknowledged that Colombia initially appeared to misinterpret India's stance, but after a diplomatic engagement with the South American nation's foreign ministry, the matter was resolved.
"I'm very pleased to say that following our discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vice Minister announced that this statement has been withdrawn and that they will certainly express publicly their understanding and sympathy for our situation," Tharoor said during a conversation with the think tank The Colombian Council On International Relations (Cori) at the Gun Club, as quoted by ANI.
Speaking to political analysts and diplomats, Tharoor further stated: "That mission is to reach out to people like you and communicate our point of view and our concerns about recent events in our country, which you have already alluded to — the terrorist attack on our country and our decisive response — which perhaps was not initially what they understood, as you alluded to the statement that was issued. We were very disappointed by that statement."
Earlier, India had objected to Colombia’s statement, which offered condolences for lives lost in Pakistan after India’s precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, following the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Tharoor had made it clear that the Indian military's action was an act of self-defence, not aggression.
“We were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism," he had said.
