In a spirited start to his third term, Prime Minister Modi launched a scathing attack on the main Opposition Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha session today. Addressing the media before the House convened, the Prime Minister marked June 25 as the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, calling it a “black spot” on India’s democracy.
This Parliament session follows recent elections where the Opposition, buoyed by strong performances, limited BJP’s majority. Despite this setback, the Prime Minister asserted BJP’s determination to resist Opposition challenges in the House.
Highlighting the significance of his government’s re-election for a third consecutive term, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the voters, emphasizing it as a mandate for their policies and dedication. Referring to the Emergency era, he condemned its imposition, vowing that such an event must never recur.
While stressing the need for a responsible Opposition that focuses on substantive debate rather than disruption, the Prime Minister urged MPs to prioritize public welfare. He also acknowledged the historic moment as new MPs took their oath in the newly constructed Parliament building.
However, the Prime Minister’s remarks drew swift criticism from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who accused him of deflecting attention from pressing issues like NEET protests, recent accidents, and ongoing violence. Kharge vowed that the INDIA Opposition bloc would vigorously represent people’s concerns both inside and outside Parliament.
