In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the elevation of India-Brunei relations to an "enhanced partnership" during his historic visit to the Southeast Asian nation on Wednesday. The announcement was made after PM Modi held extensive talks with Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, focusing on strengthening cooperation across key sectors.

During the visit, PM Modi emphasized the centuries-old cultural ties between India and Brunei, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome extended to him by the Bruneian leadership. "I thank you and the entire royal family for your kind words and warm welcome. On behalf of 140 crore Indians, I extend my wishes to you and all the people of Brunei on the 40th Independence Day," said Modi.

Reflecting on the deep-rooted cultural connections, Modi highlighted the importance of this relationship, stating, "Our relationship has become stronger every day under your leadership." The talks between the two leaders culminated in several agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in agriculture, industry, pharmaceuticals, health, technology, and cybersecurity.

In particular, Modi highlighted the strategic nature of the partnership, calling Brunei a key partner in India's Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision. He also recalled Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's visit to India in 2018, underscoring the continuity and growth in bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister also announced increased collaboration in the field of space, specifically in satellite development, remote sensing, and training. "Direct linkage will be started soon for connectivity between the two countries. Our people-to-people relationship is the essence of our partnership," Modi added, praising the contributions of the Indian community to Brunei's economy and society.

Concluding his remarks, PM Modi reiterated India's commitment to the centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in its foreign policy, stressing the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight in the region.
