Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress Party on Friday, highlighting what he described as the party’s habit of making “unreal promises” that are unsustainable and ultimately undeliverable. His comments came in response to recent remarks by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who advised Congress state units to propose only “fiscally doable” promises in their election guarantees, cautioning against commitments that may lead to financial strain.

Taking to X, Modi remarked, “The Congress Party is realizing the hard way that making unreal promises is easy, but implementing them is tough or impossible.” He added that Congress, facing public scrutiny, now finds itself “badly exposed.”

Modi’s criticism expanded to Congress-led states, naming Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana, where he argued the “developmental trajectory and fiscal health is turning from bad to worse.” He asserted that the party’s “so-called guarantees lie unfulfilled,” leaving promises to benefit marginalized communities, including youth, farmers, and women, as “terrible deceit.” According to Modi, the failure to deliver on guarantees has diluted existing welfare programs, affecting the lives of the vulnerable populations Congress claims to support.

Meanwhile, at a press conference in Maharashtra, Kharge warned that making excessive guarantees without regard for fiscal limits could result in “bankruptcy,” leaving future generations with “nothing but a bad name.” Kharge further advised state party units to avoid announcing guarantees that lack budgetary support to ensure a sustainable approach to governance.

The Congress President’s statements have ignited debates within political circles, with BJP leaders seizing on Kharge’s comments as evidence of Congress’s struggle with its credibility and delivery in governance.
