Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on the opposition ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, accusing them of trying to disrupt proceedings for political gain after being repeatedly rejected by the electorate. Speaking in his customary address on Monday, PM Modi said, “Those who have been rejected by the public 80-90 times are now trying to control Parliament through hooliganism.”
He criticized the behavior of certain opposition members, stating that their attempts to create chaos in Parliament were being closely observed by the public, who would hold them accountable at the right time. He added that while their disruptive efforts fail to achieve their goals, they reflect a disregard for democracy and the sentiments of their colleagues.
PM Modi’s remarks come shortly after the BJP’s resounding electoral successes in Maharashtra and Haryana. In Maharashtra, the BJP-led coalition secured 235 seats in the assembly elections, leaving the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with just 49 seats in the 288-member House. In Haryana, the BJP clinched a surprise third consecutive victory, defeating the Congress, which was predicted to win. These victories have further solidified the BJP’s political standing ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The Prime Minister expressed hope for a constructive Winter Session and emphasized the importance of healthy debates in Parliament. He pointed out that while some opposition members had agreed with his calls for smooth parliamentary functioning, a few continued to prioritize disruptions over meaningful dialogue.
The Winter Session, which began on Monday and will run until December 20, carries special significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution. PM Modi described it as a pivotal moment in the country’s parliamentary history and urged members to make the session productive, reflecting the aspirations of a nation moving forward with optimism into the new year.
Concluding his address, PM Modi noted that 2024 marked the final stretch of the year and expressed excitement about the country’s progress as it prepared to enter a new chapter. The session is expected to witness intense debates, with the BJP focusing on its legislative priorities while addressing key national issues.
