Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, a day after the latter resigned from office citing health concerns. Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi acknowledged Dhankhar’s long-standing service to the nation and wished him well.
"Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health," the Prime Minister posted.
The Rajya Sabha officially announced Dhankhar’s resignation during its morning proceedings on Tuesday. Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh informed the House that the Ministry of Home Affairs had received and accepted the resignation, effective immediately under Article 67(a) of the Constitution. The announcement was made moments before the House was adjourned amid continued opposition protests.
Dhankhar, who served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, had submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday. In his letter, he stated: "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately."
He also expressed his deep appreciation for the support he received during his tenure, noting the “soothing and wonderful working relationship” with President Murmu. In addition, he thanked Prime Minister Modi and the Council of Ministers for their cooperation.
"Prime Minister's cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office," Dhankhar added.
