The Indian political and cultural landscape mourns the loss of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, who passed away at his Mumbai residence at the age of 89. Affectionately known as the ‘He-Man’ of Indian cinema, Dharmendra’s six-decade-long career in over 300 films made him a household name and a cultural icon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on X, describing Dharmendra’s passing as the “end of an era.” “He was an iconic film personality who brought charm and depth to every role. His simplicity, humility, and warmth touched the lives of millions,” PM Modi said, highlighting Dharmendra’s contribution not only to cinema but also to the nation’s cultural identity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah called him “one of the rare actors who brought every character to life,” praising his remarkable journey from an ordinary background to cinematic legend. “Through his art, he won the hearts of millions across generations. India has lost a true gem,” Shah added.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lauded Dharmendra’s timeless roles, noting, “From the brave hero in Sholay to the soulful poet in Satyakam, his legacy will echo forever.” Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also paid homage, saying, “His unparalleled contribution to cinema over nearly seven decades will always be remembered with respect and love. My condolences to his family, friends, and admirers.”
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar reflected on Dharmendra’s enduring legacy, “His charisma, warmth, and unforgettable performances defined an era of Indian cinema and touched millions of hearts. His magic from Sholay, filmed in Ramanagara, will live on forever.”
Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule added, “Dharmendra ji was a true legend whose simplicity, warmth, and contribution to Indian cinema will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers.”
