    Controversies

    1. Coal Allocation Scam (Coalgate):

In 2012, Naveen Jindal faced allegations related to the coal allocation scam, commonly known as “Coalgate.” The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused Jindal and his company, Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), of manipulating the coal block allocation process. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) later filed a charge sheet alleging that JSPL, along with former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda and others, influenced the screening committee to allot coal blocks by investing over ₹2 crore in illegal gratification.

    2. Zee News Extortion Case:

In 2012, Jindal accused Zee News editors Sudhir Chaudhary and Sameer Ahluwalia of attempting to extort ₹100 crore from his company in exchange for not airing negative news reports about JSPL’s alleged involvement in the coal scam. Jindal Steel and Power Limited released footage from a sting operation purportedly showing the editors making the extortion demands. The case drew significant media attention and highlighted issues of media ethics and corporate pressure.

    3. Electoral Bonds Controversy:

In 2024, it was reported that Jindal Group companies, including JSPL and Jindal Stainless Ltd, purchased electoral bonds worth ₹195.5 crore. These purchases placed them among the top 50 donors, according to data from the Election Commission of India. The use of electoral bonds has been a subject of debate in India, with concerns about transparency in political funding.
