In a dramatic turn of events, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor announced on Thursday that he would embark on a fast unto death to demand the cancellation of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) preliminary examination held last month. Kishor, who has recently been vocal in supporting protesting aspirants, is calling for the exams to be conducted afresh.

Corruption Allegations and Protest Demands
Speaking to reporters, Kishor alleged widespread corruption in the recruitment process for government jobs in Bihar. “I have learnt that thousands of crores of rupees have changed hands for these vacant posts,” he claimed. The political strategist-turned-activist also demanded punitive action against officials involved in the alleged irregularities.

“My demands include cancellation of the exam and holding fresh tests. I also seek action against corrupt officials,” Kishor reiterated, standing firm on his decision to join the aggrieved candidates.

48-Hour Ultimatum Ignored
Earlier this week, Kishor had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led government to address the students’ grievances. The deadline expired with no resolution, prompting Kishor to intensify his protest. “As of now, the future of our young students should be the top priority. We can play the game of politics later,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of the issue.

Criticism of Nitish Kumar’s Silence
Kishor criticized Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his perceived inaction and absence from the scene. “The candidates are protesting in biting cold, braving lathi charges and water cannons, yet the Chief Minister remains silent. He is away in Delhi, enjoying himself, and has not spoken a word when asked by reporters about the stir,” Kishor remarked on Monday.

Clashes with Police and No Assurance from the Government
Tensions escalated earlier this week when police used water cannons and resorted to lathi charges to disperse protesters trying to march toward the Chief Minister’s residence. Despite a meeting between a delegation of students and Bihar Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, protesters reported that no concrete assurances or timelines were given to resolve their demands.

Support from Aspirants
The protesting aspirants have found a strong ally in Kishor, who has vowed to stay by their side until their demands are met. His decision to fast unto death has brought the issue to the forefront, adding pressure on the Bihar government to act swiftly.
