Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Initiative’ on Friday, emphasizing the need for visionary and comprehensive solutions to address the global water crisis. Speaking at the event, PM Modi underscored the fundamental importance of water, citing a Sanskrit quote that highlights water’s role as the origin of all living beings and its crucial role in sustaining life.
“Water donation and saving water for others is the greatest form of donation,” PM Modi stated, referencing the teachings of Rahim Das. He emphasized that India must lead the world in finding solutions to water scarcity, drawing from its historical approach and commitment to visionary policies.
The ‘Jal Sanchay’ initiative, launched in Gujarat, aims to significantly enhance rainwater harvesting and ensure long-term water sustainability. This program is a collaboration between the Government of Gujarat and the Ministry of Jal Shakti and involves the construction of approximately 24,800 rainwater harvesting structures across the state. The initiative seeks to promote community involvement and ownership, reflecting a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach to water conservation.
In his address, PM Modi highlighted the severe impacts of recent natural calamities, including the heavy rains and floods that have affected various parts of India. He recounted his experiences as Chief Minister of Gujarat, noting the unprecedented rainfall and the state’s efforts to manage the crisis. Modi recalled past criticism of the SAUNI scheme, which opponents had mocked, claiming the pipes would deliver air instead of water. He pointed out that the success of these projects is now clear for all to see, affirming that India can overcome water scarcity challenges.
The ‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Initiative’ builds on the earlier ‘Jal Sanchay’ program and aims to mobilize citizens, local bodies, and industries to ensure water security. By enhancing rainwater harvesting, the initiative aims to provide sustainable solutions to water scarcity and reinforce the country’s commitment to addressing this critical issue.
The official statement from the Ministry of Jal Shakti praised the program’s emphasis on community partnership and its role in fostering a water-secure future. With nearly 25,000 rainwater harvesting structures set to be constructed, the initiative represents a significant step toward achieving long-term water sustainability in Gujarat and beyond.
