Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took the oath as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, holding a copy of the Indian Constitution in her hand. The symbolic gesture highlighted her commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
Priyanka’s swearing-in makes her the third member of the Gandhi family currently serving in Parliament, alongside her mother Sonia Gandhi, a Rajya Sabha MP, and her brother Rahul Gandhi, a Lok Sabha member. She recently won the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election in Kerala, securing a landslide victory with a margin of over four lakh votes.
The Wayanad seat was previously held by Rahul Gandhi, who vacated it after winning from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024 general elections. Priyanka’s victory further cemented the Congress party’s influence in the constituency.
Family members, including Priyanka’s husband Robert Vadra, son Raihan, and daughter Miraya, were present in Parliament to witness the ceremony. Congress workers from Wayanad also traveled to Delhi to present her with the election certificate.
In addition to Priyanka, Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan took the oath as an MP after winning the Nanded bypoll. Chavan defeated BJP’s Santukrao Hambarde by a narrow margin of 1,457 votes, in a contest necessitated by the demise of sitting MP Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into Parliament marks another milestone for the Gandhi family and is seen as a significant moment for the Congress party.
