The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has thrown its weight behind Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its official nominee for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, marking a decisive step in both honoring loyal veterans and widening its influence in southern India.
Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, has been in politics for decades and is credited with standing firm when the party was struggling to find ground in the Dravidian heartland. Known for his simple lifestyle and deep connect with party workers, he emerged as a natural choice for the high constitutional office after intense consultations within the NDA.
Announcing the decision, BJP president JP Nadda said, “The name of CP Radhakrishnan was unanimously approved in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His long political journey, dedication, and commitment to public service make him a worthy candidate for the Vice Presidency.”
The Vice President’s post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down last month, triggering the need for fresh elections. As per the Election Commission’s schedule, nominations close on August 22 and the election will be conducted on September 9.
