Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur criticized Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday for his silence regarding the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Thakur accused Rahul of speaking extensively about Gaza in Parliament while remaining silent on the violence against minorities in the neighboring country amid its ongoing political crisis.
"We are all concerned about what is happening in our neighboring country, Bangladesh. All parties have raised concerns about the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities there. However, it is unfortunate that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, did not address the attacks on Hindus while congratulating the leader of the interim government in Bangladesh. What is preventing him from discussing the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh? Why speak about Gaza but not Bangladesh?" Thakur said in the Lok Sabha.
On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi congratulated Professor Muhammad Yunus on his appointment as the head of Bangladesh?s interim government via a tweet. He emphasized the need for a swift restoration of peace and normalcy but did not mention the attacks on Hindus, a point Thakur highlighted during his parliamentary address.
"Congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on being sworn in as the head of Bangladesh?s interim government. A swift restoration of peace and normalcy is the need of the hour," Rahul tweeted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his best wishes to Professor Yunus on assuming his new role, underscoring the importance of restoring normalcy and ensuring the protection of Hindu minorities.
?My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security, and development,? tweeted PM Modi.
Yunus, 84, was sworn in during a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday night, amid widespread unrest in Bangladesh following weeks of student-led protests that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina?s resignation and subsequent flight to India.
