Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati launched a sharp political attack on the Congress Party on Saturday, accusing it of historic and continued betrayal of Dalits, tribals, and other backward communities. Her remarks come in the wake of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s recent acknowledgment of his party’s failure to meet the aspirations of these marginalized sections.
Taking to social media platform X, Mayawati dismissed Gandhi’s remarks as nothing more than “self-serving politics.” She described the Congress’s decades-long approach toward Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) as “sad and unfortunate,” asserting that it was this very exclusionary attitude that forced Dalits and tribals to form their own political platforms.
"It was the Congress party’s historical negligence and betrayal that pushed us to build a separate political voice — the BSP. Now that they are out of power, they are pretending to care about the very people they ignored for decades. These are nothing but crocodile tears," Mayawati stated.
She also accused the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of hypocrisy, claiming both major parties — Congress and BJP — have colluded to keep reservation benefits either diluted or defunct. "They are cut from the same cloth — casteist parties that speak of social justice but act against it through their policies," she added.
Mayawati reminded the public that it took Congress nearly four decades to bestow Bharat Ratna upon Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, calling it a symbol of the party's true attitude towards Dalit icons and issues.
Highlighting her own tenure as Chief Minister, Mayawati claimed her government ensured safety, dignity, and real empowerment for all marginalized groups, especially the Bahujan Samaj. “The iron guarantee for the welfare of Bahujans lies only with the BSP,” she declared, positioning her party as the only credible platform genuinely committed to SC/ST/OBC welfare.
