Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar addressed a press conference on Monday, June 3, ahead of the much-anticipated declaration of the Lok Sabha Election Results 2024, set for Tuesday. The press briefing followed meetings with delegations from the Opposition's I.N.D.I.A bloc and the NDA, who visited the Election Commission to discuss the counting process.
CEC Rajiv Kumar highlighted the historic voter turnout, stating, "Voters scripted history in 2024. Over 31 crore women cast their vote. We have created a world record of 642 million voters. This is 1.5 times the voters of all G7 countries and 2.5 times the voters of 27 countries in the EU." The Election Commission of India celebrated this achievement by giving a standing ovation to all voters who participated in the Lok Sabha elections.
Kumar noted that there were significantly fewer repolling instances compared to previous general elections. "Due to the meticulous work of the election personnel, we ensured fewer repolls. We saw 39 repolls in Lok Sabha polls 2024 as opposed to 540 in 2019, and 25 out of 39 repolls were in just 2 States," he said.
Responding to allegations by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh that the Union Home Minister called District Magistrates (DMs) and Returning Officers (ROs), CEC Rajiv Kumar firmly stated, "Can someone influence them all? Tell us who did this. We will punish the person who did it. It is not right that you spread a rumour and doubt everyone."
