Colombia Reverses Stance On India-Pakistan Row, Extends Strong Support For India’s Anti-Terror Stand: Shashi Tharoor

In a significant diplomatic development, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that Colombia has officially reversed its earlier stance on the India-Pakistan conflict and will now issue a statement offering “strong support” for India’s position on terrorism.

Tharoor, who is currently leading an all-party delegation across Latin America as part of Operation Sindoor — India’s campaign to expose Pakistan’s role in cross-border terrorism — shared the development following a meeting with Colombia’s foreign ministry in Bogotá.

“We met with the foreign ministry — the senior vice minister received us. We had some good news: They have withdrawn their statement that disappointed us earlier and will issue a statement of strong support for our position and understanding of our position,” Tharoor told ANI.

The Congress MP also noted the symbolic importance of the moment, as the Indian delegation paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá.

“Finally, here we are before this beautiful bust of Mahatma Gandhi on the campus of the main university,” he added.

Earlier Criticism Over Colombia's Sympathy for Pakistan

Tharoor had earlier criticised the Colombian government for its reaction to India's airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, which were carried out in response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 that killed 26 civilians. Instead of condemning terrorism, Colombia had expressed condolences over Pakistani casualties resulting from India’s retaliatory strikes.

“We were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government, which apparently expressed heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in Pakistan after the Indian strikes, rather than sympathising with the victims of terrorism,” Tharoor had said.

Diplomatic Push Continues

India’s diplomatic outreach through Operation Sindoor aims to consolidate international opinion against Pakistan’s support for terrorism. After successful visits to Panama and Guyana, the Indian delegation arrived in Colombia on Thursday. Their next stops include Brazil and the United States.

Tharoor welcomed Colombia’s decision to revise its earlier position and emphasised the importance of international alignment on the issue of terrorism.

“The Vice Minister very graciously mentioned that they have withdrawn the statement that we had expressed concern about and that they fully understand our position on the matter, which is something we really value,” he said, speaking to ANI.
