On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, demanding an unconditional apology for what he described as the imposition of dictatorship on democratic India.

"On this day, we demand that the Congress party should offer an unconditional apology to the people of India for imposing dictatorship, imposing Emergency on a nation whose history and civilisation is rooted in democracy," Sarma stated.

He further said that the Congress must issue an open declaration assuring that such actions will never be repeated. "Congress party should also and must give an open declaration that they will never bring back the Emergency to our country," he added.

Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Assam CM remarked, "Rahul Gandhi must realise and remember that it is his family and his party who have murdered the Constitution, the spirit of the Constitution and the soul of the Constitution."

Sarma’s remarks come amid a wave of political statements across the country, as parties reflect on the Emergency declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, which lasted 21 months and saw suspension of civil liberties, press censorship, and arrests of opposition leaders.
