U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that he will “very quickly” bring lasting peace between Pakistan and Afghanistan, describing the decades-long tension between the two neighbors as the last unresolved conflict on his global peace agenda.
Trump made the remarks during the signing ceremony of the Thailand–Cambodia peace accord, held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“We’re averaging one [peace deal] a month. There’s only one left — Pakistan and Afghanistan — but I’ll get that solved very quickly. I know them both,” Trump said, drawing attention to what he referred to as his record of resolving “eight un-endable wars.”
According to Trump, the eight conflicts he claims to have ended under his leadership include:
Cambodia–Thailand
Kosovo–Serbia
Congo–Rwanda
Pakistan–India
Israel–Iran
Egypt–Ethiopia
Armenia–Azerbaijan
Israel–Hamas
“There’s never been anything like this — eight wars ended in eight months. No administration has ever done that,” Trump said. He added that pursuing peace was one of his proudest accomplishments, remarking, “If I can save millions of lives, that’s worth everything. Presidents usually start wars — I end them.”
