Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the devastating fire at a nightclub in Arpora that claimed 25 lives, including four tourists, in one of the state’s deadliest accidents in recent years.
The blaze, which tore through the popular late-night venue shortly after midnight, left both staff and visitors trapped as emergency teams struggled to control the rapidly spreading flames. The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage over alleged safety lapses and illegal operations.
Speaking to reporters after reviewing the site, Sawant confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered and that the club’s owner and general manager will be arrested as part of the probe.
He said the state government would not tolerate negligence, especially in establishments catering to large crowds and tourists.
Sawant emphasised that the inquiry will examine all aspects of the incident, including licensing, fire safety compliance, and whether the club was functioning beyond permissible hours. “Those responsible will face strict action. There will be no leniency,” he said, adding that the administration is coordinating efforts to support families of the victims.
