In one of the most tragic air disasters in recent years, an Air India flight bound for London crashed near Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area on Thursday morning, leaving more than 150 people feared dead and the nation reeling in shock. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep anguish over the horrific accident and assured that urgent rescue and relief measures are underway.

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it,” PM Modi said in an official statement. He further added, “Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected.”

The ill-fated Air India flight AI171, with 242 passengers on board, crashed moments after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft plunged into the densely populated Meghaninagar locality, triggering panic and widespread destruction on the ground.

Shortly after the crash, PM Modi personally contacted Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu to take stock of the situation. The Prime Minister directed that “all necessary support be extended immediately” and asked to be updated regularly.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that a special team has been dispatched to investigate the cause of the crash. Air India also issued a statement confirming the incident: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in the incident near Ahmedabad airport. We are coordinating with authorities and emergency teams on the ground.”

Rescue operations continued throughout the day, with local residents, firefighters, and NDRF personnel working tirelessly at the crash site. Authorities have sealed off the area and are working to identify the deceased.
