In a significant development, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge confirmed via social media that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reversed its earlier decision and granted him clearance to travel to the United States for an official visit scheduled between June 14 and 27.

Kharge had initially applied for permission on May 15 to represent the Karnataka government at two major international forums and participate in over 25 official meetings with leading global companies, academic institutions, and policy think tanks. However, his request was denied without explanation, triggering criticism from the Congress party, which accused the BJP-led Centre of politicising international engagements.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kharge wrote: "So in a U-turn, the Ministry of External Affairs has now decided to revoke its earlier decision and grant me a clearance for an official visit to the United States... My application was denied without any official explanation."

Kharge, who serves as Karnataka’s Minister for IT, BT, and Rural Development, said the visit aims to attract global investment, build strategic partnerships, and explore opportunities in technology and innovation. The trip includes meetings with top executives, academic leaders, and venture capitalists to pitch Karnataka as a premier investment destination.

While welcoming the clearance, Kharge questioned the initial denial and emphasized the need to keep development agendas above political rivalry.

"This isn’t about a party. It’s about representing Karnataka on the global stage and opening new doors for growth, innovation, and employment," he added in follow-up remarks.
