'Kashmir Was An Invasion, Not A Dispute': Jaishankar Slams UN & Western Nations

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly criticized the West’s hypocrisy on the Kashmir issue, stating that what was originally an invasion had been reframed as a dispute. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2025, he also emphasized the need for a "strong and fair" United Nations, accusing Western nations of applying different standards to international conflicts.

Jaishankar questioned the United Nations' role in handling Kashmir, arguing that it had equated the attacker with the victim. He pointed out that after World War II, India’s sovereignty over Kashmir had been compromised due to external interference, naming the UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, and the US as culpable parties in distorting the historical narrative.

"We all speak of sovereignty and territorial integrity. It's a vital principle and a bedrock of global rules. After World War II, the longest-standing illegal presence and occupation of a territory by another country pertains to India in Kashmir. We went to the UN. What was an invasion was made into a dispute. The attacker and the victim were put on par. Who were the culpable parties? UK, Canada, Belgium, Australia, USA? So pardon me, I have some question marks on that whole topic…,” he asserted.

Further, Jaishankar accused the West of political interference, stating that when Western nations intervene in other countries, it is framed as a pursuit of democratic freedoms, but when non-Western nations engage with the West, they are perceived as having malign intentions.

"If we need to have an order, there must be fairness… We need a strong UN but a strong UN requires a fair UN… A strong global order must have some basic consistency of standards," Jaishankar remarked.
