Konkan Railway Revises Monsoon Timetable, Cuts Duration And Boosts Safety Measures

In a proactive step to ensure safer and smoother rail travel during the upcoming rainy season, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced a revised monsoon timetable, which will now be in effect from June 15 to October 20, 2025. This marks a reduction of 15 days compared to previous years, a move attributed to improved infrastructure and better monsoon preparedness.

At the KR headquarters in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha said, “This year, we have shortened the monsoon timetable by 15 days. Extensive cleaning of catchwater drains and inspection of cuttings have already been conducted. Our geo-safety projects have significantly reduced incidents of boulder falls and soil slippages.”

Previously, the timetable spanned from June 10 to October 31. Now, the start has been delayed by five days and the end brought forward by ten. A senior KR official noted that this decision follows comprehensive safety assessments and enhancements across the route. Jha added that geo-safety projects worth ₹34 crore were undertaken this year to fortify vulnerable sections and improve operational reliability during heavy rains.

Jha also mentioned that 636 trained personnel will be deployed along the route, including 40 critical locations where round-the-clock patrolling will be maintained. These preparations have been underway for the past three months to minimize disruption during the monsoon.

Jha further informed that he has requested Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to address frequent power grid failures by MSEDCL, which can lead to trains getting stranded inside tunnels. However, he assured that back-up power systems are already in place to prevent such occurrences.

As part of safety protocols, trains will operate at reduced speeds during the monsoon timetable. The speed between Roha and Veer (47 km) will be 120 km/h, between Veer and Kankavali (245 km) it will be 75 km/h, and between Kankavali and Udupi (377 km) and from Udupi to Thokur (47 km) the speed will be maintained at 90 km/h. Loco pilots have also been directed to lower speeds to 40 km/h during conditions of low visibility caused by heavy rainfall.
